ECOBAHIA: Ecological Foundation
The Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation was founded on November 20, 1999 and is made up of people committed to caring for the environment. It is a nonprofit civil organization devoted to protecting and conserving the environment, as well as providing aid to the community in which it operates.
Some of the Caribbean's outstanding characteristics are its beaches and coral reefs. The GBP Mayan Riviera Resort Complex has the privilege of having within its grounds a coral reef that forms part of the world's second largest barrier reef. The Ecological Foundation implemented a research, protection and environmental education program for the coral reef. The Foundation also operates a program geared towards conserving and protecting the sea turtle, as the resort complex is located right in front of a beach that is considered as one of the most important in Mexico in terms of sea turtle nesting. It also has a nursery that reproduces, recovers and propagates plants (some in danger of extinction) that are used for the recovery of some areas. All these plants are reinforced with natural fertilizers and watered with previously treated water.
There are different plant species of the region in the Botanical Garden, which serve to teach about ecology and raise environmental awareness through guided tours given to students from several communities, including Chemuyil, Puerto Aventuras and other nearby towns. Activities involving the active participation of people from the community of Chemuyil are held on a regular basis. These are designed to support the shared objective of maintaining sustainable development. Ecological awareness is being raised among the resort complex's staff and the guests who visit it through a daily effort aimed at favoring recycling and reducing the consumption of natural resources.
The Foundation is currently working on an environmental management system called "Marti". The program's most important points include: water savings, energy savings, appropriate handling of solid waste (separating organic and inorganic garbage) and hazardous waste.
